Welcome to Our Dream

Zoos evolve. The animals interact and change in ways that may be unexpected, but still must be dealt with. New and better methods of animal care develop as knowledge increases about habits and habitats in the wild.

Animals mature according to the laws of nature. Our zoo has grown according to a Master Plan that has given guidance for the development of the Zoo since we opened in 1963. Now that plan has run its course. It is time for a new plan.

Our new plan is a dream, just as the old plan was: a dream of what the Zoological Gardens could become.

Our dream is not to become a large zoo, but to become the Santa Barbara of zoos: small, with concentrated excellence in every detail.

The development of this new plan has been an exhilarating experience. A grant from the Institute of Museum Services made possible the extensive research, surveying, discussion-- and dreaming-that have gone into its creation. We'd like to show you our dream...and then we'd like to ask you to help us make it come true.

A dream of a garden where animals rear their young in safety and comfort, and where people can observe--and learn from--the wild creatures of our world.
