A basic hot tub consists of a tank, a heater, a pump and a filter; where you go from there is up to you. The size of the tub, the number and placement of
seats, decking, lights, steps, hydro-jets, floor bubblers, blowers and so on is limited only by your imagination (and your wallet.)
Even the design of the tub itself is limited only to compressible shapes.
It can be installed indoors, in a basement or in a garage... and even if it's outside in a cold climate, it can be used year-around. Some people swear by a long hot soak, followed by a roll in the snow.
Redwood is an efficient insulator, too. The untended tub will lose only a few degrees a day. Both gas and electric heaters are available, and take only a short time to bring the tub up to the proper temperature. Even the most elaborate hot tub set-ups are much less expensive than a swimming pool, and are much less troublesome in up-keep: there is absolutely no maintenance needed except for occasional chlorination.
