The Pits
All the racing machines used the same garage, the Long Beach
Convention Center, which was open to the adoring public (at$3/per head per day).
The garage was huge: We were surrounded by spectators, fenced off, gawked at from all sides.
Matt was the main mechanic and taskmaster, and Joe Babine and Dave Kaplan worked under
Matt's instruction to fix things that went wrong during practice runs on Friday and Saturday.
Our neighbors in the pits were the Dobbs Brothers team on one side, and on the other side Pete Esseff and his girlfriend.
