Rocks

Stone is available through various rock yards and local haulers. If a job is large enough money can be saved by purchasing stone directly from a quarry.

Types of stone:

Natural, as it came out of the ground.

Random chop-- Stone that has been sheared across the grain to produce strips of random height and length.

Ledgestone, uniform thickness stone that has been sheared across the grain producing uniform height and usually random length strips of stone

Double split, sheared both across the grain and with the grain to produce both runners and jumpers. Runners are strips of stone set horizontally (like brick) Jumpers are usually set horizontally but are taller than runners thus eliminating long horizontal masonry joints.

Unitized, precut to fit together with a given joint size with little or no cutting.
